This isn’t your typical hot chocolate recipe, which is why I’m calling it Nourishing Hot Chocolate.

But, before I share the recipe with you, let me first share a story and a bit of a warning that may save you in the making of this hot chocolate:

On Friday night, after making this recipe several times throughout the past week, I thought I would make it one more time to finalize the ingredients before sharing the recipe with you here on the blog.

I has music blaring and I was bopping around in the kitchen dancing and singing along with my favourite Ed Sheeran jams.

I had all of the ingredients in my Vitamix and then confidently flicked on the power switch, ready to make the best mug of hot chocolate ever and then it happened…

My entire kitchen was suddenly brown.

There was hot chocolate dripping from the ceiling.

And my face was feeling a little tender from the hot beverage that just got splashed onto my face.

What I failed to do was double check the settings on the Vitamix – it was set to high speed and when I turned the power on, it was an immediate explosion.

So, here is my reminder to you:

Please do yourself a favour and double check the settings of your Vitamix before turning it on to blend up this hot chocolate.

It will save you a lot of time, frustration, and that beautiful face of yours 🙂

Ok, now let’s talk about this “nourishing hot chocolate” recipe!

I’m calling it “nourishing” because it includes some of my favourite love-your-body ingredients:

Raw cacao powder

Raw cacao powder is rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly magnesium. Magnesium is incredibly nourishing for our hormones because it calms the nervous system, prevents excessive cortisol levels, and aids in the production of progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, and thyroid hormones. Many of us are magnesium deficient, so I am always mindful of magnesium supplementation and intake through whole foods!

Reishi powder

Reishi won’t be found in your typical hot chocolate recipe, but it’s one of the main reasons why I refer to this recipe as “nourishing hot chocolate”! Reishi is my favourite mushroom and is known as the Queen of Mushrooms. The list of health benefits is long, but it’s well known for it’s ability to nourish the immune and endocrine systems as well as act as an adaptogen within the body, supporting your body in adapting to stress more efficiently while also supporting your sleep.

Coconut butter

Coconut butter is different than coconut oil – it’s the flesh of the coconut ground up into a butter! Not only is it delicious and one of my favourite snacks, but it’s an incredible source of healthy fats and fibre! I love snacking on it straight from the jar, but it’s a great addition to recipes, such as this one, as it makes warm beverages extra creamy, rich, and slightly sweet!

Dates

According to Ayurvedic medicine, dates are considered to be a superfood because of their ability to support peace to the mind and body while also nourishing the immune system and reproductive tissues, which can support increasing libido and fertility. They are rich in potassium and magnesium and they are my personal favourite real-food sweetener! All it takes is one date to make this Nourishing Hot Chocolate just a little bit sweet and a whole lot loving to your body!
