Ever since Christina made her Vanilla Milkshake Smoothie for me while I was in San Diego, I am now on a bit of a smoothie kick!

I’ve never been much of a smoothie person in the past, but I have been having so much fun experimenting with different ingredients and combinations over the past several days that I’ve actually created quite a few new recipes worth sharing with you!

Today, I’ll be sharing my recipe for a thick, low-sugar smoothie that is made with a minimal amount of fruit, cacao, healthy fats, and… veggies!

I think that’s one of the reasons why I’m loving smoothies so much lately, though – it gives me the opportunity to add even more veggies into my day without really noticing it at all! Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love eating my vegetables, but it’s also fun to eat something with vegetables in it that doesn’t taste vegetable-y at all!

If you’ve never tried adding vegetables to your smoothie before, I highly recommend you try this smoothie! I’ve added frozen cauliflower to it and you can’t even tell! All you can taste is the sweet, tartiness of the raspberries paired with the delicious cacao flavour that (almost) all of us know and love! I say “almost” because Scott doesn’t like chocolate and I just don’t get it. Whenever I make him a smoothie, I’m instructed to only use fruit.

To each their own, but, if you’re like me, you’ll love the chocolatey-ness of this smoothie! One of my favourite flavour combinations is chocolate + raspberry, so this smoothie had me feeling all the feels! It’s so yummy!

Oh, I almost forgot to mention! In addition to frozen cauliflower, this smoothie also contains avocado! Avocado is one of my favourite smoothie add ins because it not only adds healthy fats to the recipe, but it also creates the most perfect texture! Avocados are creamy and dense, which is perfect if you like a thick smoothie like me!

In my opinion, the thicker the smoothie, the better!

Ok, let’s get to this recipe! Remember, if you enjoy my recipes and share them on social media, don’t forget to tag me @megtherhn so I can see your creations! I love seeing what you are making and nourishing your body with!

Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie (with hidden veggies!)
Author: Meg Doll
Serves: 1
A low-carb, low-sugar smoothie with hidden veggies and tons of fibre!
Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups frozen raspberries (~ 150g)
  • 1.5 cups frozen cauliflower (~ 140g)
  • 1/2 small avocado (~ 2oz.)
  • 1 heaping tbsp cacao powder (~ 14g)
  • 1 scoop Vanilla flavoured protein powder of choice (see note below)
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla cashew milk (250ml)
  • 1 pinch high quality sea salt
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in a high power blender.
  2. Blend until smooth, transfer to a bowl, top with desired toppings, and enjoy!

You can use whatever vanilla flavoured protein powder you like, but I recommend one that is naturally sweetened. I personally tolerate dairy products, so I use a stevia sweetened grass fed whey protein powder, but you can use a non-dairy protein powder if you do not tolerate dairy. My favourite non-dairy protein powder is from Eqip, which is made with grass fed beef. If you are looking for a plant-based protein powder, I enjoy this one from Nutiva.

You could also use collagen, like this one from Vital Proteins, but you would have to add vanilla flavouring and a sweetener, such as stevia, to compensate if you want the recipe to taste similar to how I’ve created it. Although I love adding collagen to my diet, it’s important to note that it’s not a complete source of protein, which is why I use it more as a supplement than rely on it as a protein source for a meal.
